Session 9: Persuasive Technology in the Context of Developing Reading Skills for Third Graders in Low-Performing Government Schools

There are five types of social cues that stem from Social Psychology and inform the interface design or user experience when designing a tool that enables learning. The five cues, in the context of my project are as follows:

1. Physical: this would generally entail the use of colors, font and interactive-ness of the interface that would be suitable for 7-9 year old students while also keeping in mind that overuse of graphics/colors and text can easily increase cognitive load and may inhibit learning.

2. Psychological: This would be a very important component of my project as we are designing for government school who may not have interacted with software before, thus we must keep their interest alive while also being simple and easy to comprehend.

3. Language: We may need the application to be multi-lingual as this is specifically designed to encourage reading of a second language i.e. English whereas users are most comfortable with Urdu and Punjabi. We may use rhymes in languages other than English in order to make use of previously developed schema for the Urdu alphabet.

4. Social dynamics: As previously mentioned, there is negligible support from the teacher and the parent thus making the application a “thin application” because of the lack of human-human support for learning. Therefore, it would become extremely important for the software to incorporate praise, appreciation, repetition, encouraging remarks, hints and so on.

5. Social roles: I think this aspect of design would have to be the most creative in order to engage students perhaps by using their favorite teacher’s voice or videos or making them responsible for the care of pet by way of solving word puzzles or the like.
